Chapter 36
15 And the LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to them by his messengers, rising early and sending them, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling. 16 They mocked the angels of God, despised his words, and strayed from his prophets until the wrath of the LORD rose against his people, till there was no healing. 17 He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and he did not spare young man or virgin, elder or aged. He gave them all into his hand. 18 He took all the vessels of the house of God, both large and small, and the treasuries of the house of the LORD and the treasuries of the king and his officials—he brought all of them to Babylon. 19 They burned the house of God, tore down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its palaces with fire and all its desirable vessels to destroy them. 20 He exiled the remnant who had escaped the sword to Babylon, and they became servants to him and his sons until the rule of the kingdom of Persia. 21 to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths. All the days of its desolation it kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years. 22 And in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, the LORD stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, and he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also in writing, saying: 23 Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth the LORD God of heaven has given to me, and he has appointed me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.
